The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of...

Last Saturday I sat down and put together the flower list for this week. In the build up to Christmas, it felt that the shop had exploded with nothing but red amaryllis, red roses and red berries and anything that stood still long enough got glittered.

An overwhelming feeling, actually a desperate need, overcame me for a quiet purity; for a new beginning. I wanted to feel intoxicated by the flowers' fresh fragrance and the largeness of the blooms. I needed to see their complex texture or the simplicity of their form.

Today the flowers arrived; the fridge is full, the shop has been freshly painted and I have said good bye to 2013 and closed all those half opened doors. In doing so already it feels like a hundred more doors have opened. The New Year has begun and with it comes a year of fresh starts and a plethora of possibilities. May 2014 be everything you hope for. For me, just the thought of it is good enough. It is the stuff that dreams are made of...

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

It's not that I am a Bah Humbug (cough) but as an adult, I have never really enjoyed Christmas. It was always tinged with family dynamics, sharing children, the stress of finding the right present or an overall sense of sadness. But as Albert Einstein said: The definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So let's switch it up and bit and see what we get!

To start with, I have brought Anne Turcic, a Christmas specialist, down from Canada to help out in the shop. She's more passionate about Christmas than Rudolf. Since she arrived, Anne's been decorating everything from 20' trees and wreaths for clients and creating and designing our now famous 2' trees. I am sure she'd decorate me if I stood still long enough! The air in the shop is festive and infectious. Fresh Magnolia Wreaths, lacquered in Antique Gold or Silver, hang on the wall. And there is a pile of pine wreaths excitedly waiting to be decorated.

Our reaction to the mini carnations was surprising. Sssshh. Don't tell.... we adore them!

They sort of destroy all the preconceptions I have had about carnations. Hmmm.

The Belle Fleur Candles are so beautifully fragrant. I have been doing a poll on people's favourite. And there's a complete art to smelling them you know! One has to waft the dome in front of your nose and like a wisp of air from a genie's lamp, the smell escapes! I have my favourite - what's yours?

CARING FOR YOUR FLOWERS

Cut Flowers
There are several ways to ensure that your flowers last longer. Before arranging your flowers in a vase, trim the stems on a slight angle. Top up the container regularly with fresh water. Keep your flowers away from drafts and direct sunlight -- the cooler the room, the longer your flowers will last. Remove spent flowers as they fade.

Hand Tied Arrangements
Our hand tied flowers are presented cinched at the waist in a cellophane package filled with water. Once the flowers arrive home, they should be transferred to a vase. Fill the vase two-thirds full of cool water. Untie the package over a sink (otherwise the water will spill onto the counter) and transfer the arrangement to your vase. Check the water level regularly as flowers get thirsty, replacing the water completely every few days.
